How to Get Your Business Cited by AI Search in 2026

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is not a secret new trick. AI search cites pages it can crawl, understand and trust, so the work is strong SEO plus quotable, well-structured answers.

Short answer: AI search tools such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity cite pages they can crawl, read as plain text and trust. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the discipline of making your pages easy for those systems to find, understand and quote. In practice that means solid technical SEO, clear direct answers, real expertise and consistent facts about your business across the web.

There is a lot of noise around GEO right now, so this guide sticks to what the platforms themselves have published and what our team sees when we audit sites.

What GEO, AEO and SEO actually mean

The three terms overlap, and that is the point. They are layers of the same job.

Term What it optimises for Typical output
SEO (search engine optimisation) Ranking in classic search results Blue links, rich results
AEO (answer engine optimisation) Being the direct answer to a question Featured snippets, voice answers, AI answer boxes
GEO (generative engine optimisation) Being retrieved, summarised and cited by AI models Citations inside AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude

If your SEO foundations are weak, AEO and GEO have nothing to stand on. If your SEO is strong but your content never answers a question directly, you will rank but rarely be quoted.

What Google says about appearing in AI features

Google's own guidance on AI features and your website is refreshingly direct. It states that the usual SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in them.

The technical basics it highlights are the ones many sites still get wrong:

  1. Crawling must be allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your CDN or hosting.
  2. Important content should be easy to find through internal links.
  3. Pages should offer a good page experience.
  4. Important content should be available as text, not only inside images, video or scripts.

That last point matters more than most people realise. Many modern sites render everything with JavaScript. Google can usually handle that, but many other crawlers do not run JavaScript at all. If your page source is an empty shell, a lot of AI systems simply see nothing.

What OpenAI says about ChatGPT search

OpenAI documents its crawlers publicly in its overview of OpenAI crawlers. The key detail for visibility: OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot relates to model training. They are controlled separately in robots.txt, so you can choose to appear in ChatGPT search while making a different choice about training.

If your robots.txt or firewall blocks OAI-SearchBot, you are opting out of ChatGPT search answers, often without realising it. We regularly find security plugins and CDN bot rules doing exactly this.

The NezT GEO checklist

This is the order we work through when we audit a site for AI search visibility.

1. Make sure the machines can actually read you

  • Check robots.txt allows Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot (unless you have a reason not to).
  • Check your CDN or firewall is not silently challenging these bots.
  • View the raw HTML of key pages. If the main content is missing before JavaScript runs, add server rendering or prerendering.
  • Publish a clean XML sitemap and keep it updated.

2. Answer first, explain second

AI systems lift short, self-contained passages. Structure pages so they can.

  • Open each page or section with a two to three sentence direct answer.
  • Use headings that mirror real questions people ask.
  • Put definitions, steps and comparisons in lists and tables rather than long paragraphs.
  • Add an FAQ section for the follow-up questions buyers actually ask.

3. Prove you know what you are talking about

Generic content is easy to replace with a generated summary. Expertise is not.

  • Share specific methods, trade-offs and when not to do something.
  • Show real work: case studies, process, before and after, with honest scope.
  • Name the people or team behind the content and keep an about page that explains who you are.
  • Cite authoritative sources when you state facts.

4. Make your entity unmistakable

AI systems try to understand who you are, not just what a page says.

  • Keep your business name, services, location and contact details consistent everywhere.
  • Add Organization schema with your logo, founding date and official social profiles.
  • Make sure your profiles on LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and industry directories match your site.

5. Measure what you can

There is no perfect GEO dashboard yet, so combine signals.

  • Google Search Console includes traffic from AI features in its normal Search reports.
  • Watch server logs for AI crawler visits so you know you are being read.
  • Run a fixed set of buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google every month and record whether you are cited.

What does not work

A few tactics are being sold hard and deserve scepticism.

  • Special "AI schema". Structured data helps search engines understand pages, but Google says there is no special markup required for AI features.
  • Mass-produced articles. Publishing hundreds of thin AI-written posts is far more likely to hurt trust than earn citations.
  • Keyword stuffing for chatbots. Models reward clarity and usefulness, not repetition.

Key takeaways

  • GEO is built on SEO. Fix crawling, rendering and internal linking first.
  • Let the right bots in. OAI-SearchBot controls ChatGPT search visibility.
  • Write quotable answers: direct, structured and specific.
  • Expertise and consistent business facts are what make AI systems trust you.
  • Track citations manually alongside Search Console until better tools mature.

FAQ

Is GEO different from SEO?

GEO focuses on being cited inside AI-generated answers rather than only ranking as a link. The foundations are the same as SEO: crawlable pages, helpful content and trust. GEO adds extra emphasis on direct answers, structure and entity clarity.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

An llms.txt file is an emerging convention that gives AI tools a plain summary of your site and key links. It is cheap to add and can help some tools, but it is not a requirement for Google's AI features and it will not compensate for weak content.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

It depends on how often your site is crawled and how competitive the topic is. Technical fixes such as unblocking a crawler can take effect within days, while building enough authority to be cited for competitive questions usually takes months of consistent publishing.

Can a small business compete with big brands in AI search?

Yes, especially on specific questions. AI answers often cite the page that answers a narrow question best, not the biggest brand. Deep, specific content about your niche and location is where smaller businesses win.
